Civil registry - In most countries, births, deaths, and marriages are recorded at a government controlled births, deaths and marriages registry office (eg. the Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages in many Commonwealth countries).

Civil marriage in China - In 2003 the Taiwanese government led by the Presidential office proposed legislation granting marriages to same-sex couples under the Human Rights Basic Law; however it faced opposition among cabinet members and has been stalled since. General Register Office - The General Register Office (GRO) is that part of the government of England and Wales that deals with the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths. It was founded in 1836 and civil registration commenced in 1837.
